1 GB of RAM runs a static site, a proxy or a bot without a database

A minimal Linux install with SSH, a firewall and Nginx uses around 200 MB. That leaves about 700 MB for the job itself, which is enough for a static or cached site, a reverse proxy in front of another server, a Telegram or Discord bot that keeps its state in a file or an external database, an uptime monitor or a cron runner for scheduled scripts.

A hypothetical example: a bot that answers 5,000 users a day and stores data in SQLite fits in 1 GB with room to spare. The same bot with PostgreSQL on the same server does not. The Telegram bot page shows the sizing for both cases.

A database on the same server is where 1 GB stops working

MySQL or PostgreSQL alone wants 300 to 600 MB to keep indexes in memory. Add PHP-FPM workers or a Node process and the server hits its limit at the first traffic spike. Linux then kills the largest process, usually the database, and the site goes down until someone restarts it.

If the job needs a database, compare against 2 GB plans: the cheapest one right now is RackNerd KVM 2 GB at $3 a month (billed yearly at $35.99). The 2 GB page lists all of them.

Not sure 1 GB is enough? Enter the workload in the calculator: it sizes memory and cores and shows matching plans with checked prices.

The lowest price usually needs a year paid upfront

The first row of the table, RackNerd KVM 1 GB, is billed for the full term in advance: the monthly figure is the term price divided by the months. That is a fair price if you will keep the server for a year, and a loss if the project stops in month three.

For tests and short projects pick a plan without prepayment or with hourly billing. The monthly-billing page collects plans you can cancel after one month.

Check the disk and the IPv4 address before saving the last dollar

Among 1 GB plans, the cheapest NVMe one is MassiveGRID Starter at $3.99 a month. On a small server the disk matters because swap and logs live there: a fast disk keeps a short memory spike from turning into a frozen server.

Check that a public IPv4 address is included. Some low prices assume IPv6 only, and an IPv4 costs extra. Our IPv4 cost guide explains why that line keeps growing.

Upgrade to 2 GB when the server swaps every day

Watch two numbers for a week: memory used without cache, and swap in use. If memory sits above 85% and swap grows every day, the plan is too small. Most providers in the table resize a KVM server in a few minutes with a reboot, so starting at 1 GB is a low-risk choice for a job you are not sure about yet.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest VPS with 1 GB of RAM?

As of October 25, 2026: RackNerd KVM 1 GB (1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD, the USA) at $1.83 a month (billed yearly at $21.99). If you do not want to prepay, the cheapest monthly option is MassiveGRID Starter at $3.99 a month.

Is 1 GB of RAM enough for a VPS?

For a static site, a reverse proxy, a small bot without a database, a monitoring agent or a personal Git mirror, yes. Linux with SSH and a web server idles at 150 to 250 MB. Once MySQL or PostgreSQL runs on the same server, 1 GB leaves no headroom and the kernel starts killing processes under load: take 2 GB

Can WordPress run on a 1 GB VPS?

It starts, but with page caching only and a strict limit on PHP workers. A traffic spike or a heavy plugin will return memory errors. For a site that earns money, 2 GB is the practical floor

Why do some 1 GB plans cost three times more than others?

The gap comes from prepayment (the lowest monthly figures often need a year paid upfront), disk type (NVMe or SATA SSD), the location and what is bundled: backups, DDoS filtering, a control panel, managed services. The table shows the billing condition under each price

Should I add swap on a 1 GB server?

Yes, 1 to 2 GB of swap on an SSD or NVMe disk protects against sudden out-of-memory kills. It does not replace memory: if the server lives in swap all day, the plan is too small
