A VPS costs from $1.83 a month in our catalog, and a 2 GB server, the practical minimum for a site with a database, runs from $3.00 to $43.99 with a median of $7.98. These figures come from 40 plans priced in US dollars, all checked on the providers' sites on October 25, 2026. Four things set the price, and knowing them lets you judge a quote in a minute.

A 2 GB VPS costs $3 to $44 a month, and the median is $7.98

The same amount of memory can cost fifteen times more at one host than at another. Here is the range for each common size across the plans we track:

RAM Plans Lowest Median Highest
1 GB 6 $1.83, RackNerd KVM 1 GB (billed yearly) $5.47 $11.00, Cloudways DO Standard 1GB
2 GB 13 $3.00, RackNerd KVM 2 GB (billed yearly) $7.98 $43.99, RoseHosting NVME 2
4 GB 9 $5.00, RackNerd KVM 4 GB (billed yearly) $14.99 $64.99, RoseHosting NVME 4
8 GB 8 $19.16, MassiveGRID Professional $29.49 $89.99, RoseHosting NVME 8

Prices checked October 25, 2026. Live prices and every plan are in the catalog.

The bottom of each row is an unmanaged server billed yearly, the top is a managed service. The median is a fair benchmark: if a plain unmanaged 2 GB server is quoted well above $8 a month, ask what the extra pays for.

Under $5 a month buys a real KVM server, mostly in the US and billed yearly

Seven plans in our catalog cost $5 or less a month. All are full KVM virtual machines with a dedicated IPv4 address included, and all of them can run in the US: RackNerd, VPS.org, DataPacket, and MassiveGRID's Starter, which is also the only one here with London, Frankfurt and Singapore.

The lowest prices come with a condition. RackNerd's KVM 2 GB is $35.99 a year, which is $3.00 a month, and its KVM 4 GB is $59.99 a year. RackNerd states on its specials page that these plans renew at the same rate for as long as you keep the service, so the yearly price is not a first-term promo. The trade is that you pay twelve months up front.

This tier fits a hypothetical Telegram bot, a personal site, a staging server or a box for scheduled scripts. For more plans at this budget, see our cheapest VPS list and the 2 GB RAM shortlist.

$5 to $10 a month adds monthly billing, NVMe and European locations

Above $5 and up to $10 there are eight plans, and this is the tier for small production projects. You can pay month to month, NVMe disks become common, and the choice of European cities widens: Hostman Cloud 3 at $7.00 gives 2 vCPU, 2 GB and 60 GB NVMe in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Helsinki, Paris or New York, and Ethernet Servers' 2 GB plan at $6.00 runs in Frankfurt or London as well as three US cities. is*hosting Lite at $5.94 is the entry point to 40 countries.

The same budget also buys more memory: Hostman Cloud 4 gives 4 GB for $10.00, and if you stay in the US, VPSDime's Linux VPS 6 GB costs $7.00. A project with three small WordPress sites fits comfortably here on 2 to 4 GB. If you need servers close to European users, compare the options on VPS in Europe and the cheap VPS in Europe page.

$10 to $25 a month is where 8 GB and wider geography come in

Sixteen plans sit above $10 and up to $25. Hostman Cloud 5 gives 4 vCPU, 8 GB and 160 GB NVMe for $22.00. MassiveGRID Professional offers 8 GB for $19.16 with Singapore among its locations, and is*hosting sells servers in Dubai from $10.19.

This is the tier for an online store, a busy WordPress install or a database server that keeps its working set in memory. Put in money for a year on a 4 GB server: RackNerd KVM 4 GB costs $59.99, Hostman Cloud 4 costs $120 and is*hosting Medium costs $254.88. The cheapest saves about $195 a year; the dearest buys a choice of 40 countries.

Managed 2 GB plans cost $24 to $44: you pay for people, not hardware

At the top of each row the extra money buys a service layer. Cloudways DO Standard 2GB costs $24.00 and RoseHosting NVME 2 costs $43.99 for the same 2 GB that RackNerd sells for $3.00. Cloudways runs a managed platform on top of DigitalOcean; RoseHosting's administrators set up and fix the server for you.

It pays off when an hour of downtime costs more than the fee and nobody on the team runs servers. Our managed vs unmanaged guide works through the break-even.

Four lines decide the real monthly price

The sticker price is only the start. Before you compare two plans, check:

  1. Billing term. Yearly and three-year terms cut the monthly figure. Truehost Cloud Starter is $6.00 a month on a 36-month term, $216 paid up front.
  2. IPv4 address. RackNerd, is*hosting and most US plans in our catalog include one. Hostman's cloud plans are listed in our catalog without one, so confirm the address price at checkout. Our IPv4 cost guide shows what an extra address adds.
  3. Location. The same 2 GB costs $3.00 in the US at RackNerd and $16.99 in Dubai at is*hosting. See VPS in the USA and VPS in Asia for local options.
  4. Disk type. NVMe plans start at $3.99 (MassiveGRID Starter, 1 GB). Whether you need it depends on the workload, see NVMe vs SSD.

Renewal price, backups and egress traffic can add more over a year, as covered in what a server really costs.

Pick the tier by workload, then compare inside it

A hypothetical Telegram bot with a few thousand users runs on 1 to 2 GB, so the under-$5 tier covers it. A small business site with WordPress and MySQL needs 2 to 4 GB: budget $5 to $10. A production database or a store with search wants 4 to 8 GB, which means $10 to $25. The full table by workload is in how much RAM a VPS needs.

Then compare plans of that size on location and billing term. For a shortlist in one step, use the calculator or open VPS for a website.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a VPS cost per month in 2026?

In our catalog a VPS costs from $1.83 a month (1 GB, billed yearly). A 2 GB server runs from $3.00 to $43.99, with a median of $7.98, and a 4 GB server has a median of $14.99. Prices checked October 25, 2026.

Why are some VPS plans so much cheaper than others with the same RAM?

Four things explain most of the gap: billing term (yearly plans are cheaper per month), location (US plans are usually the cheapest), whether an IPv4 address is included, and whether the provider manages the server for you.

Is a yearly VPS plan a good deal?

It is if you will keep the server for a year and the renewal price matches. RackNerd states that its yearly specials renew at the same rate. Check the renewal terms before paying for any multi-month plan.

What can I run on a $5 VPS?

A $5 budget buys 1 to 4 GB of RAM in our catalog, enough for a bot, a personal site, a small API or a staging server. A site with a database and steady traffic is more comfortable on 2 to 4 GB.

Does a managed VPS cost more?

Yes. In our catalog a managed 2 GB plan costs $24.00 to $43.99 a month, while unmanaged 2 GB plans start at $3.00 and the median for the size is $7.98. The difference pays for setup, updates and support.
