DigitalOcean Agent Droplets Pricing: $50 Buys a 15% Discount, Not a Server

Agent Droplets Pro costs $50 and covers $58.82 of agent usage; an always-on 2 vCPU, 4 GB sandbox lists at $92 a month against $24 for a Droplet.

DigitalOcean Agent Droplets is a monthly subscription for DigitalOcean Managed Agents, not a virtual server: the Pro plan costs $50 a month and turns into $58.82 of agent usage at list prices, a 15% discount, and the Team plan costs $200 and covers $250, a 20% discount. Neither plan includes a fixed amount of vCPU, RAM or disk. That makes the choice between a managed agent and an agent on your own VPS a sum you can do in advance, and for an agent that runs around the clock the VPS wins by a wide margin.

What the $50 and $200 plans include

DigitalOcean introduced Agent Droplets on October 1, 2026, after Managed Agents entered public preview on September 22, and both are still in public preview. Both paid tiers allow unlimited agents and unlimited seats, subject to fair use, and include access to more than 16,000 tools through DigitalOcean's Action Gateway (code interpreter, browser automation, web search and web fetch among them), plus single sign-on, MFA, role-based access and audit logs at no extra charge. New customers can start on a $5 credit with no card.

The key line is in DigitalOcean's own documentation: the plans "change how you pay for the Managed Agents resources you use. They do not add compute, models, or tools of their own." The fee is billed in advance and loaded as a balance. Pro's $50 covers $58.82 of usage at standard rates, Team's $200 covers $250.00. After that, usage continues at list price from your other balances for the rest of the month.

The discount applies to the agent runtime (CPU, memory, session storage, snapshots, egress), to models hosted by DigitalOcean such as Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3, and to Action Gateway tools. It does not apply to third-party models: Claude and GPT are billed pay-as-you-go at list price, even though they draw from the same balance.

What an agent costs per month on each route

The runtime is metered at $0.044 per vCPU-hour of CPU actually used and $0.0095 per GB-hour of memory. At full allocation the default Medium sandbox, 2 vCPU and 4 GB, lists at $0.126 an hour. If it stays busy for the whole month, about 730 hours, that is $91.98 at list price. On the Pro plan the first $58.82 is prepaid by the $50 fee and the remaining $33.16 bills at list, so the month comes to $83.16 before any model calls.

The same shape as a regular Basic Droplet, 2 vCPU and 4 GiB RAM with 80 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB of transfer, costs $24 a month flat. Run n8n or your own agent code on it and the server line is about $59 a month cheaper than the managed runtime on Pro. The model bill is separate on both routes: if your agent calls Claude or GPT, you pay the same list price either way.

The managed runtime makes sense for bursty work. Sandboxes start in about a second and pause when idle, and you pay for consumption. A Medium sandbox busy 8 hours a day for 30 days lists at about $30 a month, close to the Droplet. Below about 6 busy hours a day, the runtime line alone costs less than the $24 server.

Where the plans break even

Because you can fund the usage balance directly and pay list price with no subscription, the plans only make sense above a threshold. Pro costs $50 whatever you use, so it beats pay-as-you-go once eligible usage passes $50 a month. Above $58.82, Pro costs your usage minus $8.82. Team costs $200 up to $250 of usage and your usage minus $50 after that. Team becomes cheaper than Pro at about $209 of monthly usage at list rates. A team that spends less than $50 a month on agents should not subscribe at all.

The 15% and 20% discounts are worth more if your agents run on DigitalOcean-hosted open models. If most of your spend is Claude or GPT calls, that part gets no discount, and the subscription only cuts the runtime and tool lines.

What to do if you are choosing

Estimate how many hours a month your agent is actually busy. An agent that answers webhooks, watches a queue or runs scheduled jobs around the clock belongs on a VPS with a flat monthly price, and you can compare 2 vCPU, 4 GB plans at $24 or less such plans across hosts in our catalog or the VPS for AI workloads and VPS for n8n selections. An agent that wakes up a few hours a day and needs a browser, a code sandbox and governed tool access without you maintaining them is where Agent Droplets earns its fee, provided your monthly usage clears $50. Either way, price the model calls separately, because they are often the largest line and no hosting plan discounts frontier models.
