Hourly billing turns a server into a one-day expense
With hourly billing you top up a balance, create a server, and the provider charges for every hour it exists. Delete it after a day of tests and you pay for 24 hours, not a month. That makes hourly providers the default for anything temporary: a load test before a launch, a demo for a client, a build machine for a release, a staging copy to reproduce a bug.
For development work specifically see the development and testing page.
A server that runs all month costs the same as monthly billing
Hourly rates are derived from the monthly price, and most providers cap the charge at that monthly price. So hourly billing does not cost more for a permanent server; it only gives you the option to stop paying sooner.
The cheapest 2 GB plan with hourly billing is Hostman Cloud 3 at $7 a month.
A powered-off server is still billed
The most common surprise: stopping a server in the panel does not stop the charge, because the disk and the IP address stay reserved. To pay nothing, snapshot the server and delete it, then restore from the snapshot when you need it again. The snapshot itself costs a little per gigabyte.
IPv4 addresses are a separate line at several providers; see what an IPv4 address costs.
Hourly billing makes big servers cheap to try
Running Hostman Cloud 5 (8 GB, $22 a month) for a two-day benchmark costs a small fraction of the monthly price. That is the cheapest way to find out whether a workload needs 8 GB before committing to it.
When the size is settled, compare against 8 GB plans and 4 GB plans from all providers, including those with yearly prepayment.
For a permanent server, compare with prepaid yearly plans
If the server will run for a year or more, a prepaid plan from another provider can be cheaper per month. The cheap VPS page marks those rows with the billing term; the monthly-billing page shows plans you can cancel after any month.
Frequently asked questions
Which VPS providers bill by the hour?
In our base, as of October 25, 2026: Hostman, VDSina, Cloudways. The cheapest plan among them is Hostman Cloud 3 (2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Helsinki, Paris or New York) at $7 a month
How is an hourly VPS charged?
The provider divides the monthly price into an hourly rate (a month is about 730 hours) and charges for every started hour while the server exists, usually from a prepaid balance. Most cap the charge at the monthly price, so a server that runs all month costs the same as on monthly billing. Check the exact hourly rate on the provider’s page: rounding differs
Does a stopped server still cost money?
At most providers, yes: a powered-off server still holds its disk, IP address and reserved resources, so billing continues. To stop paying, take a snapshot and delete the server. Snapshots and backups are billed separately per gigabyte
When is hourly billing cheaper than a yearly plan?
For anything that lives less than a few months: tests, load trials, a CI runner for a release week, a temporary staging copy, a short event. For a server that runs all year, a yearly prepaid plan from another provider is usually cheaper per month, as the prepaid rows on the cheap VPS page show
Can I scale an hourly VPS up and down?
Usually yes: you resize the server to a bigger plan for a few hours or days and pay the higher hourly rate only for that time. Scaling down is not always possible if the disk grew; check the provider’s rules
