VPS for a Minecraft server
Hosting a Minecraft (Java or Bedrock) server for you and your players
Why that many
A Minecraft server is a memory and single-thread story. The game runs on Java, which claims a heap up front and fills it as chunks load and players spread out; run short and the server stutters and drops ticks. It also leans on one CPU core more than on many, so the clock speed of a single thread matters more than the core count. Mods and plugins multiply both: a heavy modpack can want as much memory for ten players as vanilla wants for fifty
disk from 20 GB
Vanilla or light plugins, a handful of friends, up to about ten players
disk from 40 GB
Plugins and a community server, around twenty players, a few loaded chunks
disk from 60 GB
A modpack or many players, worlds that keep growing on disk
- Single-thread CPU performance (clock speed), not just the number of cores
- Whether the provider allows game servers on the plan at all
- DDoS protection — game servers are a common target
- That RAM is dedicated, not oversold, so the Java heap has real memory

Common questions about a minecraft server
How much RAM for a Minecraft server
Roughly four gigabytes for a small vanilla or lightly-modded server, six to eight once you add plugins, players and loaded chunks, and more for a serious modpack. The calculator sizes CPU and memory for you; tune the exact heap to your mods and player count, and give Java a gigabyte of headroom above what you set
Why does clock speed matter more than cores
The core game loop is largely single-threaded, so it runs on one CPU thread and cannot spread the world tick across many cores. A server with fewer but faster cores holds a steady tick rate better than one with many slow cores. Extra cores still help the operating system, backups and side processes, but the tick lives on one thread
