How many resources you need

Why that many

Docker itself is light — the daemon adds almost nothing. What eats memory is what you run inside: each container carries its own application, and a Postgres, a Redis and two Node services on one host quietly add up to several gigabytes. CPU matters less than memory until you start building images, which is CPU- and disk-heavy. The one hard requirement is real virtualization: Docker needs its own kernel, so an OpenVZ container will not run it — only KVM

01 · Minimum
1 × 2 GB

disk from 25 GB

A couple of small containers: a bot, an API, a lightweight database

02 · Workingtypical choice
2 × 4 GB

disk from 50 GB

A docker-compose stack of several services, occasional image builds

03 · With headroom
4 × 8 GB

disk from 80 GB

Many containers, heavier databases, frequent builds in CI

What to check before paying
  • That virtualization is KVM, not OpenVZ — Docker needs its own kernel
  • Disk type: NVMe or SSD, image layers and volumes do a lot of small reads and writes
  • How much a dedicated IPv4 costs if you expose services to the internet
  • Whether backups cover volumes, not just the system disk
How this ties into the matching. The calculator below is already set up for this workload: 2 cores and 4 GB of memory from the recommendation are filled in. You can change the values and the match recalculates instantly. A workload fit adds +25 points to a provider, the full formula

Questions

Common questions about a docker

Will Docker run on any VPS

Only on KVM or another full virtualization. On OpenVZ the server shares the host kernel and cannot load Docker’s modules, so you hit errors on the first container. Most modern VPS plans are KVM, but it is worth confirming before you order, because the very cheapest plans are sometimes OpenVZ

How much memory do containers need

Budget by what runs inside, not by the number of containers. Idle containers cost almost nothing; a real database or a JVM app inside one can take a gigabyte on its own. A safe rule is to add up the memory each application would need on its own and leave a gigabyte of headroom for the host and for image builds
