What a low price hides
A cheap VPS is usually a densely packed one: the memory is yours, the CPU and disk are shared. That is fine for the right job and a trap for the wrong one. Four things decide which
KVM, not OpenVZ
The cheapest plans are sometimes OpenVZ, which shares the host kernel and cannot run Docker or a custom kernel. KVM is real virtualization and worth the small premium for almost any real workload
The IPv4 address
A dedicated IPv4 is increasingly a paid add-on. On a two-dollar plan a one-or-two-dollar address is a large share of the bill. Check whether one is included and what a second costs
The renewal price
The lowest numbers are often promotional first-term prices. What matters is the recurring price, because you pay it every month after the first. A cheap first month with a triple renewal is not cheap
Backups and DDoS
On the cheapest tiers backups are billed per gigabyte and DDoS protection may be absent. Neither is optional for anything that earns money; price them in before comparing

What is the cheapest VPS you can actually run something on
The floor is around one or two dollars a month for a single core and a gigabyte of memory, usually in the United States on a densely packed host. That is enough for a bot, a small API or a static site. For anything with a database or real traffic, the honest minimum is two gigabytes of memory, which moves the price into the three-to-six-dollar range
Is a two-dollar VPS worth it
It can be, for the right job. The catch is not the price but what is not written on the card: the plan may be OpenVZ rather than KVM, the CPU may be shared with many neighbours, the IPv4 address may cost extra, and the renewal price may be higher than the first term. A two-dollar server for a side project is fine; for anything that earns money, read the four checks below first
What is the catch with a cheap VPS
Density. A low price usually means many tenants on one physical host, so the memory is yours but the CPU and the disk are shared and can slow to a crawl at peak hours. The advertised speed is measured on an empty server; the number that matters is the one on a busy weekday. That is why every price here carries a verification date and why the comparison shows price per gigabyte, not just the sticker price
