NVMe makes a database and a store faster, not a static site

A page in an online store or a CMS without full-page cache triggers dozens of small random reads: indexes, sessions, product rows. A SATA SSD answers each one in a fraction of a millisecond, NVMe several times faster, and the gap adds up under load. A static site or a bot that keeps everything in memory barely touches the disk, so there the disk type hardly matters.

The workloads where it pays off most: a database, an online store and a game server with a large world.

48% of VPS plans under $15 already run on NVMe

Of 27 plans under $15 with a fresh price in our base, 13 use NVMe. NVMe is no longer a premium tier: at many providers it is the default disk, and the cheapest NVMe plan is only a few dollars above the cheapest plan of any kind.

The cheapest plan with a SATA SSD is RackNerd KVM 1 GB at $1.83 a month (billed yearly at $21.99); the cheapest NVMe plan is MassiveGRID Starter at $3.99 a month.

Memory still matters more than the disk

NVMe helps only when data does not fit in memory. A database that fits in RAM runs equally fast on either disk, so size memory first. The cheapest NVMe plan with at least 4 GB is VPSDime Linux VPS 6 GB at $7 a month; compare it with all 4 GB plans.

Ask about IOPS limits before you pay

Some providers cap disk operations per plan, so a cheap NVMe plan may deliver less than the hardware can. The limit is often in the terms of service or the plan comparison, not on the main pricing card. If the workload is disk-heavy, ask support for the IOPS cap and run a fio test in the first days, while a refund is still possible.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest NVMe VPS?

As of October 25, 2026: MassiveGRID Starter (1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 32 GB NVMe, New York, London, Frankfurt or Singapore) at $3.99 a month. With 2 GB of RAM: Hostman Cloud 3 at $7 a month.

Is NVMe worth paying extra for on a VPS?

For a database, a store, 1,000+ page sites without full-page cache, CI builds and game servers with large worlds, yes: these workloads make many small random reads, and NVMe serves them several times faster than a SATA SSD. For a static site or a bot that lives in memory, the difference is hard to notice

How do I check that a VPS really has NVMe?

Look for NVMe in the plan name or specs on the provider’s pricing page, not just on the homepage. After ordering, run a short fio random-read test: a typical NVMe-backed VPS shows tens of thousands of IOPS at 4K, a SATA SSD several times fewer. Providers may also cap IOPS per plan, which is worth asking about

Do NVMe plans cost more than SSD plans?

In this price range the cheapest SSD plan is RackNerd KVM 1 GB at $1.83 a month (billed yearly at $21.99) and the cheapest NVMe plan is MassiveGRID Starter at $3.99 a month. 48% of plans under $15 in our base already use NVMe, so the premium is small or zero at many providers
