What is a cheap but reliable VPS?
By our four checks, the cheapest is VPS.org Starter at $3.50 a month (as of October 21, 2026). Reliability here means real KVM virtualization, DDoS filtering, built-in backups and the freedom to leave after a month
Why these four checks?
They are the things that fail first on the cheapest hosts: OpenVZ containers that cannot run Docker, no filtering when a neighbour is attacked, no backup when a disk dies, and a year of prepayment that locks you in. Uptime promises are not on the list because every provider writes 99.9% and none of them can be checked from outside
